Here I will delve into the miscalculation that I mentioned here. I ordered the speakers mounts and thought that I'd just attach them to the soffit and be done with it. I even put some extra 2x4's behind the particle board of the soffit for extra strength (good job thinking ahead). Now the problem. The mounts come in, and I go to put the speakers on them and realize that they won't fit. You see, the mounts are supposed to go under the speakers, not above them like I have in this picture (bad job thinking ahead). When I held the mount up to the soffit there was only like 6" from the mount to the ceiling. The speakers are 13.75" tall. You do the math. So I decide to flip the mounts over (against the recommendation of the manufacturer), and hang the speakers from them. I put the mounts at the bottom of the soffit, so they'd be lower, and I had more room to angle them down towards the seating position. Well my lovely wife Michelle thought they were too low. So I then put a piece of oak behind the mount to move it away from the soffit more, to allow more tilt. I also had to flip the speaker over so that the port wasn't aimed into the soffit. The mounts do grip the speakers very tight, and I don't think there will be any problems with using them this way. The straps are just there as a safety featrue. A lot of hassle, but like they say, all's well that ends well.
